Aviation Powerplant Mechanics
Program Length: 1,350 Hours
Program Objective:
The Aviation Powerplant Mechanics Program prepares students for employment or advanced training in the commercial and general aviation industry. Students develop the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to inspect, service, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair aircraft engines and related powerplant systems.
The program prepares students for employment as an Aviation Maintenance General Technician and Aviation Powerplant Maintenance Technician.
The Aviation Powerplant Mechanics Program provides classroom, shop, and laboratory instruction in aircraft powerplant systems, engine maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair, including:
- Aircraft drawings, weight, and balance
- Ground operations and aircraft servicing
- Aircraft materials, tools, and maintenance processes
- Basic aircraft electricity
- Aircraft maintenance records and technical publications
- Reciprocating engines
- Turbine engines
- Engine inspection and airworthiness
- Engine instrument systems
- Engine fire-protection systems
- Engine electrical systems
- Lubrication systems
- Ignition and starting systems
- Fuel-metering and fuel systems
- Engine induction and airflow systems
- Engine cooling systems
- Exhaust and thrust-reverser systems
- Aircraft propellers
- Unducted fan systems
- Auxiliary power units
Students develop hands-on skills using aviation tools, equipment, materials, and maintenance procedures. FAA Part 147 requirements include classroom, shop, and laboratory activities, with at least 50% of the curriculum taught in the shop or laboratory.

The Aviation Powerplant Mechanics Program requires 1,350 hours for full program completion.
The program consists of two Occupational Completion Points (OCPs):
